Read a great story in a help magazine:
Dear Trudy,
I hate people. Do you think there is a club for people like me?

Trudy wrote: Fortunately there is such a club. Unfortunately, I am the president and I HATE YOU.

I've seen that advice about the in-depth character studies and the little file cards pinned to the board, and always found it...uninspiring.
Now your method -- that works for me!
And furthermore...it sounds like fun. Aren't we all many people, under the skin?
I'm researching a new historical novel, one that will include a daunting roster of characters, and now that you've verbalized this approach, I'll be able to put it into practice consciously. Makes the whole process less intimidating.
Thank you.

Excellent technique. One of those things where it's easy to read and realize that "it works" without knowing exactly why. Until, of course, you just explained it.

Thank you so much for your article on the fundamental role of the subplot. Amazingly it has been an eye-opener for someone like myself entangled in a maze of ideas on how to structure and write not just another "hope you get it right this time" but clearly understand what has to be maintained to strike that delicate balance with the main plot which I believe would eventually create the theme.
